The Women’s Empowerment Project
When a peace agreement in 2003 ended 14 years of civil war, Liberia's economy and infrastructure was in shambles --it's people were left homeless and helpless. Unemployment in Liberia is currently 85 percent and over 80 percent of the population lives in poverty.
Women and children have been particularly hard-hit. They are hungry and alone. Most have suffered unspeakable cruelty at the hands of civil war soldiers. Raped, kidnapped, and beaten --many still children themselves and without family or a source of support in their war-torn homeland--they are now struggling to raise children of their own. They have had little or no education and heavy war casualties have left them with little or no family to care for them. Peacekeeping troops have abused and exploited them, leaving them few choices for survival. Going to school is out of the question -they have no money to pay tuition.
The Women's Empowerment Project, located at Mt. Barclay, near Monrovia, Liberia, provides young Liberian women with a chance for a better life. The one-year program provides daily meals, counseling, and vocational training to women who would otherwise have no hope for a secure future.
There are currently more than 200 young women waiting to be sponsored. Won't you please help? For more information contact Dave Workman: dave@gracechico.org
